Firefighters and police were lost for words at an unbelievable scene when they were rushed to an apartment on an emergency call for help to stop suicide.
A video clip released by firefighters showed a mother, half of her body sticking out of the 12-story apartment balcony window, holding onto her 21-year-old mentally handicapped daughter Thursday in Gwangju, some 265 kilometers (164 miles) south of Seoul.
The mother desperately cried out for help because she ran out of strength after grabbing the hands of her daughter for more than ten minutes, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The daughter, who recently returned from a mental rehabilitation facility, tried to shake off her mother's hands, but the rescuers could not help because the apartment's door was locked, Yonhap said.
Luckily, a police officer found that the daughter had been investigated for frequent prank calls and recalled the phone number of her father to receive the password and open the door. The mother told investigators that her daughter had tried to jump off the balcony for being prohibited from going out, Yonhap said.
