Kevin Mallory, a 60-year-old Former Special Agent and Army veteran, was arrested on Thursday for handing top-secret documents to a Chinese agent.
The FBI Counterintelligence Division has been investigating this case since April this year and during the voluntary interview, the agents believed Mallory lied to the investigators.
According to the court documents, Mallory was a special agent for the Diplomatic Security Service at the U.S. State Department and he obtained a top-secret clearance, which was terminated in October 2012 when he left the government service.
Mallory who speaks fluent Mandarin traveled to Shanghai, China in March and April to meet a Chinese agent and handed a top-secret document and two secret documents.
Mallory's Leesburg, Virginia home was raided by FBI agents and K-9 units on Thursday.
If Mallory is found guilty of treason, he could face life in prison or a possible death penalty.
