Many superstitions are still practiced by people. For this one woman in her 80s in China, it was throwing her lucky coins into the China Southern Airlines flight 380's turbine engine she was about to board.

This was going to be her first flight ever in her life. The grandma who was a devout Buddhist channeled her nervousness to exercise her superstitious belief:  throwing some coins at the plane for good luck and pray. She must have been one heck of a shot though because one of the coins landed in the jet engine.

The fellow passengers alerted Shanghai Pudong International Airport authorities. If this incident was not reported and the plane took off, it could have resulted in engine failure midair.

She was taken in for questioning and was later released because she had no prior criminal record or mental health issues.

The China Southern Airline maintenance workers unearthed all nine coins she threw in and the plane was able to take off at 6:16 pm. The flight was delayed five hours, but she arrived safely at her destination at Guangzhou airport as she wished.

The story went viral in China and it is not making headlines across the globe. There are mixed reactions to this news, however, because of the severity of the possible outcome if it was not reported.
