Smartphones were blamed for hampering the sleep of many people in South Korea. A medical group recommends the limited usage of smartphones in sleeping rooms as the blue light emitted by phone screens interrupts the secretion of melatonin that regulates sleep.

A survey of 1,400 people, conducted by pollster Gallup Korea in the second week of July, showed 34 percent could not fall into sound sleep, compared to 20 percent in 2002.

The Korea Medical Association said that people should avoid using smartphones from about two hours before they fall asleep because the blue light of smartphone screens interrupts the secretion of melatonin. It suggested that going to bed at a designated time, an exercise or a warm bath result in good sleep. Doctors said alcohol would not help sound and deep sleep.
