SK Broadband, a South Korean leading internet service provider, started a test service of its 10Gbps (gigabits per second) internet network this week in preparation for the development of the next generation internet with a speed of 100Gbps.

"We aim to take the leading role in the commercialization of the 10Gbps internet service," the company said in a statement Thursday. It showcased its 10Gbps service for the first time in the world at the International Telecommunication Union's Plenipotentiary Conference in 2014.

The 10Gbps service allows users to download a full-HD movie in the blink of an eye. The ultra-fast speed is ideal for data communications for virtual reality, augmented reality, autonomous cars and other broadcasting technologies related to media transmissions for 8K ultra definition and hologram.

SK Broadband said the ultra-fast internet service would be provided to users living in selected areas in Seoul and nearby satellite cities. It hopes to acquire 100Gbps internet technology by 2020.
