A white nationalist rally happened in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday turned deadly when a car plowed through an anti-racism protesters following the rally.
Earlier that day street brawls broke out between the white supremacists and anti-racism demonstrators. The authorities responded with full riot gears to break the fights and shut down the event after officials declaring the incident, a state emergency.
Soon after the shutdown, a car plowed through the crowd of anti-racism activists on 4th street and fled the scene in reverse. The driver was later identified as James Alex Fields, Jr., a 20-year-old man from Maumee, Ohio. He was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with one count of second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding, and one count of hit-and-run.
From the incident, a 32-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene and 19 others were injured. The videos of the after effects of the horrendous art have been circulating on social media.Many eyewitnesses recounted the moment when the car drove through the demonstrators, sending people and their belongings through the air. Many of the injured patients are still in critical conditions.
Many of both Republicans and Democratic politicians responded to the incident, deeming it as terrorism. U.S. President Donald Trump denounced the "egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides", but many criticized him for not condemning the white nationalists directly.
Trump tweeted in the evening, "Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!"
The federal authorities launched a civil rights investigation to look further into the incident.
