To support the development of virtual reality contents by start-ups and tech firms, a government funded research institute will distribute a free toolkit for developers.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), a government-funded research body, said in a statement Tuesday that it would start distributing "Danuri-VR" on its website from Wednesday.

Danuri-VR is a toolkit which can be used to make visual contents such as VR and panorama videos. The kit includes a video editing tool and an application program interface (API) based on open-source programs.

For three years, the government has invested some 11.3 billion won (9.9 million US dollars) in developing the kit that will be used in university lectures and software classes in primary, middle and high schools.

Previously, toolkits used to be distributed by tech firms to attract and support developers. The government-funded project was launched as part of efforts to speed up the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution.
