South Korea lifted a temporary ban on the distribution of sausages and ham products made from German and Dutch pork that triggered a health scare across Europe due to the Hepatitis E virus.

Discount store chains have removed ham and sausage products made with the European pork from their shelves pending a probe by health officials over allegations that some people may have caught hepatitis from infected sausages bought at a UK supermarket.

After a safety check into European ham and sausage products that began on August 24, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety concluded on Tuesday that all were found to be safe.

Hepatitis E can cause liver cirrhosis - scarring of the liver which prevents it working properly - and neurological damage. Dutch scientists claimed the virus was spread by collecting slaughtered pigs' blood before adding it back to the meat after processing it but without sterilizing it.
