LG has mounted a bold challenge to global rivals in the moderately-competitive smart home appliance market by connecting 87 products such as washing machines and air purifiers to Google's AI voice assistant.

The tech giant said the users of LG products are now capable of using simple voice commands to carry out home chores like telling a refrigerator to make more ice. The control of appliances is made via LG's centralized smartphone app.

"LG smart appliance owners can now have Google Assistant help them around the house with their connected appliances, all hands-free," LG said in a statement Tuesday.

The smart home market, led by Amazon, Phillips and Xiaomi, is expected to reach 137 billion US dollars by 2023, according to the market research group, Markets and Markets. While foreign market leaders focus on robot cleaners and smart light bulbs, South Korean companies are pushing for different angles with connected white appliances.

With Google Assistant, LG's home appliance convenience will be greatly improved as AI studies and learns the patterns of users. LG said it has also established a partnership with Amazon to strengthen smart home appliances.
