Worldwide, people took some 1.2 trillion pictures with smartphones last year, prompting many smartphone makers to promote the photographic ability of their new premium products mounted with good image sensors, a key aspect when consumers choose a smartphone.

Led by Samsung Electronics and Sony, smartphone makers have scrambled to develop smaller sensors capable of processing images brighter and faster than competitors. As a top image sensor maker, Samsung introduced two new ground-breaking image sensors.

"Both offer high-resolution image sensors in small chip packages, delivering detailed pictures in low-light environments without a camera bump," Samsung said in a  statement on Wednesday.

Samsung's new tiny sensors include the 1.28-micrometer 12-megapixel "ISOCELL Fast 2L9" with Dual Pixel technology and the 0.90-micrometer 24-megapixel "ISOCELL Slim 2X7" with Tetracell technology.

ISOCELL Slim 2X7 is the first to have a pixel smaller than one micrometer. Capable of reading more light information, it provides images which are expected by consumers who use premium smartphones.

As smartphones get thinner and installed with advanced image sensors, many devices have bumps sticking out of the rear side, generally ruining their sleek design. Samsung stressed its thinned-out new image sensors will provide superb photographic results. They can be installed either in the front or in the rear without camera bumps.
