South Korea's first offshore wind power plant made its debut on the southern island of Jeju which has led a campaign to expand the use of renewable and eco-friendly energy in a country heavily dependent on imported fossil fuel.

The offshore wind farm built by Korea South-East Power Co., a state utility company, is capable of generating 85,000 megawatts of electricity annually, enough to provide power to up to 24,000 households.

The complex has ten wind power turbines erected off the western coast of Jeju. The generators built by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction were mounted on iron towers standing 80 meters above the water with their wings stretching 91.3 meters in diameter.

Under a clean energy project to become a carbon-free island by 2030, Jeju, which is one of South Korea's most popular tourist destinations, plans to step up the construction of offshore wind power generators in other places. The island has spearheaded a national campaign to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the fast introduction of electric cars.
