Navy apologized to anyone who was offended by the penis drawing in the sky over Okanogan County, Washington, after a photo went viral on social media. Also, the local media started getting complaints about the drawing in the sky.
Navy spokesperson at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Lt. Cmdr. Leslie Hubbell confirmed that two pilots from the base were responsible for the penis drawing appeared on Thursday.
Hubbell said in a statement, "The Officers and Sailors of the United States Navy are professionals, held to the highest standards while serving our nation with pride around the world," and added, "The actions of this aircrew were wholly unacceptable and antithetical to Navy core values. We have grounded the aircrew and are conducting a thorough investigation and we will hold those responsible accountable for their actions."
Hubbell continued, "The Navy apologizes for this irresponsible and immature act. The Navy apologizes to anyone who was offended by this unacceptable action. An investigation into this flight will be conducted and if appropriate, the aviator responsible will be held accountable."
Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is the main base of the Navy's Growler electronic attack jets similar to the Blue Angels' F/A-18 Hornets.
The commander of Naval Air Forces, Vice Adm. Mike Shoemaker, addressed the issue and said in a separate statement, "Naval aviation continually strives to foster an environment of dignity and respect. Sophomoric and immature antics of a sexual nature have no place in Naval aviation today. We will investigate this incident to get all the facts and act accordingly.
