Students at Sein High School in the southeastern county of Ulju exploded into cheers of joy at their mess hall when a well-cooked mini lobster was placed each on their food tray.
The special meal which cost more than 10,000 won (9.17 US dollars) was provided last Friday along with shrimp fried rice, mango salad, noodle and juice, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The price for Sein's school lunch was fixed at 4,300 won, including a state subsidy of 1,500 won, but the school donated more than 5,000 won from its budget to prepare a special meal, Yonhap said, adding Sein was selected by regional education authorities as an excellent school meal provider last year.
South Korea's public schools provide meals from Monday through Friday. There have been some complaints among students about school kitchens and meals.
Lobsters used to be an expensive delicacy in South Korea because they are not caught around the Korean peninsula. Prices have been lowered due to free trade accords, but a popular lobster chain in Seoul sells one kilogram of lobster for about 50,000 won.
