SEOUL, Jan. 03 (Aju News) -- A sister firm of Samsung Electronics has developed a next-generation smartphone camera module with its optical zooming ability likened to a professional camera lens as the world's largest smartphone maker seeks to cement its competitive edge in the global market.

Smartphone cameras feature great image qualities, but they cannot match professional DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) cameras because small smartphone camera modules limit the movement of lenses to zoom in and out.

This week, the Korean Intellectual Property Office published a patent from Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the supplier of smartphone parts, and revealed details on its in-development smartphone camera module.

The new camera module features a combination of five lenses, an iris, an optical filter and an image sensor. It is small and thin enough to be fitted into a smartphone.

Users can freely zoom in and out with their smartphone cameras without experiencing side effects such as blurred images or downgraded image quality. Many smartphone companies are trying to develop superior camera modules because the image capturing ability of smartphone cameras is an important factor in sales.
