SEOUL, Jan. 04 (Aju News) -- Samsung Electronics has embarked on the mass production of a powerful next-generation application processor (AP) featuring AI, which is ideal for smart devices and autonomous vehicles.

The new AP's processing speed is 40 percent faster than its predecessor installed in Samsung's latest smart and mobile devices. The new chipset called "Exynos 9810" features a faster gigabit LTE modem and a sophisticated image processing ability using the deep-learning based software.

Samsung said the new chipset is ideal for ultra-high definition video streaming or transferring large data via mobile networks. "The Exynos 9810 will be a key catalyst for innovation in smart platforms such as smartphones, personal computing and automotive for the coming AI era," a Samsung official said in a statement on Thursday.

It can recognize the faces of people and objects in photographs. A similar feature is being used on Apple's latest smartphone iPhone X.

Demand for chipsets with faster data processing and transferring speed is increasing in the mobile market. Powerful mobile chips, which are smaller and less power consuming, are also needed for autonomous vehicles to process a vast amount of data.

Samsung did not say so, but Exynos 9810 AP could be used for is new flagship Galaxy S9 series to be introduced in the first quarter of this year, or for autonomous vehicles. The tech giant has acquired Harman International Industries, a US-based global leader in connected car technology, in November 2016.
