SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Aju News) -- South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom has forged an alliance with Dutch digital map producer HERE to develop 5G network-based mapping services and technology related to autonomous driving.

The South Korean company said Wednesday that an agreement on strategic partnership was signed between SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-ho and HERE CEO Edzard Overbeek at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The partnership covers cooperation in high-definition (HD) maps, 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) services, mobile navigation, real-time traffic information and other technologies.

SK Telecom said the two companies would establish a joint research and innovation center to develop a 5G-based HD map on South Korean expressways and roads in the second half of this year.

The two companies will also join hands in next-generation smart city services and HERE's HD Live Map, the most advanced cloud-based map asset to support all levels of vehicle automation. HD Live Map is the machine-read, self-healing map that automated vehicles require to "see around the corner".
