SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Aju News) -- Hyundai Motor earmarked a five-year investment of 23 trillion won (21.6 billion US dollars) in next-generation technologies such as AI, autonomous driving and hydrogen fuel-cell cars to raise its competitiveness in the fast-changing global market.

Vice president Chung Eui-sun disclosed the planned investment at talks with Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon Wednesday at a Hyundai laboratory in Yongin, 31 kilometers (19 miles) south of Seoul.

Chung said Hyundai's investment will be pumped into five sectors -- electric vehicles, autonomous and connected vehicles, robot and AI, future energy and startup nurturing -- for the next five years.

Like other carmakers competing to gain core technologies related to next-generation vehicles, Hyundai has focused on hydrogen fuel-cell cars, including "Nexo" which was showcased at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month. The company plans to carry out Nexo's test runs at this year's Winter Olympics in the eastern ski resort of Pyeongchang next month.
