SEOUL, Jan. 22 (Aju News) -- In an effort to fight super bacteria, South Korea will launch a five-year joint government project to find the cure for drug-resistant superbugs, the Ministry of Science and ICT said Monday.
The ministry said in a statement that about 47 billion won (44 million US dollars) would be injected into the project involving five government bodies. Compared to European countries, South Korea has a higher rate of using antibiotics to provide an ideal environment for superbugs.
Super bacteria, or microorganisms which are extremely resistant to drugs including antibiotics, have been a major health threat in recent years. According to the World Health Organization, more than 70,000 people die every year due to super bacterial infection. In South Korea, two patients were infected in 2010.
