SEOUL, Jan. 22 (Aju News) -- South Korean airports will introduce fingerprint and palm vein scanners for the authentication of passengers, starting this month on the most crowded domestic air route between Seoul and the southern resort island of Jeju, transport authorities said Monday.

Scanners for biometric authentication will be set up on January 29 at domestic terminals in Seoul and Jeju so that passengers can go through quick security clearance at designated gates, the transport ministry said. Clients could store biometric data about their palms and fingerprint in advance.

The use of biometric authentication which requires no identification cards will be expanded gradually to other domestic airports, the ministry said.

For safe and convenient financial transactions, financial regulators have urged credit card firms and financial institutions to introduce new technology for identification. Fingerprint scanners are widely used at banks and state bodies, but mobile payment requires hack-proof solutions to ensure safe and convenient financial transactions.
