SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics released Friday its latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S9 in South Korea and about 70 other countries including the United States, France and Australia.

Last month, Samsung introduced S9 and S9+, the larger version, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), an annual mobile trade show in Spain. The company emphasized the upgraded camera ability of its new smartphone but consumers reacted cautiously.

The lukewarm consumer reaction was reflected in the number of preorders at home. The tech giant received preorders for a week since February 28, but according to mobile industry officials, the outcome was rather disappointing.

Unlike its previous models, Samsung did not disclose the number of preorders for S9. However, market watchers say the number of S9's preorders will stay at 70 to 80 percent of Galaxy S8's. About one million units of S8 were sold through preorder promotions in early 2017.
