SEOUL -- LG Uplus, a South Korean mobile carrier, will use Nokia's high-performance ReefShark chipset to develop technology and equipment for fifth-generation (5G) wireless base stations.

LG Uplus said it would commercialize a 5G network next year using ReefShark chipsets that can increase the performance of frequency relay antennas connected to 5G wireless base station equipment and reduce the size and weight of Multiple Input Multiple Output antennas as well as power consumption.

Under a government-led roadmap, South Korean firms are trying hard to put a 5G mobile network into commercial operation next year and build nationwide infrastructure by 2020.

Competition is growing among global tech firms to accelerate the advent of a 5G digital era, but experts believe that end-to-end commercial 5G solutions can only be achieved through cross-field collaboration, referring to devices, networks, equipment and chipsets. At Winter Olympic venues in February, KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, tested its 5G commercial service for the first time in the world.
