SEOUL -- In another fence-mending gesture ahead of a historic inter-Korean summit, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has led an evening operation to transport the bodies of Chinese tourists killed in a traffic accident this week.

Kim, accompanied by senior party and government officials, visited the railway station in Pyongyang on Wednesday night to inspect a special train which would carry the bodies of Chinese tourists back to their homeland, according to the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

A bus accident on Sunday left 32 Chinese tourists dead and two seriously injured. Four North Koreans also died. Kim visited the Chinese Embassy in Pyongyang a day later to express condolences.

The two traditional allies have seen their relations soured by Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile tests and Beijing's decision to join international sanctions. Kim visited China in late March to hold a summit with Xi.
