SEOUL -- Hollywood blockbuster film "Avengers: Infinity War" attracted almost one million moviegoers on its opening day this week in South Korea, setting a new box-office record.

A total of 972,226 people watched the latest film of Disney's "Marvel Cinematic Universe" franchise on Wednesday, according to the Korea Film Council.

The superhero film had the biggest opening day. The previous record of 972,161 was set on July 26 last year by "Battleship Island", a domestic film depicting the hellish situation Korean workers had to endure in coal mines on an island during Japan's colonial rule.

Fans left reviews on online communities. "The new Avengers film was the best Hollywood blockbuster film I've ever watched," wrote Chanel, a user from South Korea's online community Clien. Another user phantom!! said, "You will never guess what happens in the new film. The story is just amazing! I am going to watch it again today!"
