SEOUL -- Hyundai Mobis, the parts-making unit of South Korea's leading carmaker Hyundai Motor, has started commercial production of digital instrument panels or digital dash, a key cockpit part for vehicle infotainment and autonomous driving.
The company said the electric version of Hyundai Motor's subcompact sport utility vehicle, Kona, is now equipped with a seven-inch high-definition panel in its digital instrument cluster. The electric SUV features driving assistant technologies to provide a semi-automated driving experience.
An electronic instrument cluster, or digital dash, is a set of instrumentation, including the speedometer, that is displayed with a digital readout.
The production of digital dash highlighted Hyundai's efforts to acquire independent technology related to a next-generation cockpit optimized for car infotainment, autonomous driving and connectivity.
Vehicle instruments have been augmented by software-powered display panels conveying information on display panels. Digital instruments present data in the form of numeric parameters, textual messages, or graphical gauges.
Hyundai Mobis aims to produce a 12.3-inch dual screen cluster and a 3D cubic cluster in the near future. The company has developed core infotainment parts such as a new head-up display (HUD), a surround view monitoring system, and a smart infotainment system called AVN (Audio Video Navigation) that will be shown on a large screen.
The next-generation car cockpit for autonomous driving requires the combined display of AVN and other infotainment features.
