SINGAPORE -- In a ceremony watched by the world, U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a monumental agreement that would open a new era of peace in Northeast Asia.

Trump hailed the agreement as "very important", saying there would be more discussions between the two sides. "We are signing a very important document, pretty comprehensive document."

However, the two countries need more discussion "at great length", Trump said, pledging a quick process. "In the meantime, I believe that they will be handing it out on behalf of Chairman Kim and myself and we are both very honored to sign the document."

"We are starting that process very quickly. Very very quickly. Absolutely," Trump said, describing the meeting in Singapore as "far better than anybody could have expected."

For his part, Kim said North Korea and the United States left the past behind to sign a "historic" accord. "Today, we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document."

The North's leader said the world would see a great change from now on. "The world will see a major change. I would like to express my gratitude to President Trump to make this meeting happen."

There was no extra information on the agreement, but Trump said the document signed by the two leaders after their talks for nearly 100 minutes is "very comprehensive". "You'll be seeing everything in just a little while. The letter that we are signing is very comprehensive."

"I think both sides are going to be very impressed with the result. A lot of good will went into this. a lot of work," he said, predicting Washington and Pyongyang would see a "much different" situation because they developed a special bond.

"Our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean Peninsula. It's going to be much different situation than it has in the past. We both want to do something. We both are going to do something. And we've developed a special bond," Trump said.

"So, people are going to be very impressed. People are going to be happy and we are going to be taking care of a very big and very dangerous problem for the world," the American leader added.
