SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has returned home safely after his historic summit with U.S President Donald Trump in Singapore, according to the country's official news agency.
The Chinese plane carrying Kim touched down at an airport in Pyongyang at 7 a.m. Wednesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, unveiling his arrival belatedly. KCNA reported earlier that Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Minister of Education Ong Ye Kung sent off Kim at Changi International Airport Tuesday night.
Kim thanked the government of Singapore once again for its "effort and sincerity for the successful" summit, KCNA said.
In Pyongyang, Kim was welcomed back home with an airport ceremony attended by senior government and party officials, KCNA said, commending the leader for ushering in a new phase of relations and steering the trend of the political situation on the Korean Peninsula "with his energetic external activities."
North Korea's media has been strictly controlled. All articles are subject to high censorship. For example, the death of Kim Jong-un's father, Kim Jong-il, had not reported for two days. The historic seating between U.S. and North Korean leaders has begun to take effect with the North's media shining light on Kim's actions and whereabouts.
