SEOUL -- The construction arm of South Korea's steel group Posco faces a special one-month security inspection due to a series of accidents in construction sites that left eight workers killed this year.

The inspection began on Monday at the head office of Posco Engineering and Construction (E&C) and 24 constructions sites nationwide, according to the labor ministry. Eight workers have died in five construction sites involving the builder this year.

in March, four workers died when a working cage fell to the ground from the 55th floor of a 101-story seaside tower and two connected high-rise residential buildings for shopping and residence, which were under construction by Posco E&C in the southern port city of Busan.

Workers inside the cage were installing glass windows to the exterior wall of the tower. The accident, which was caused by damaged bolts used to fix the cage, sparked an on-site inspection and the labor ministry has detected violations of safety rules.

POSCO has been fined twice and inspectors found that the builder and subcontractors had tried to destroy evidence. A former labor ministry official was arrested for accepting bribes from the builder.
