SEOUL -- Naver, South Korea's top web portal company, carried out rare collaboration by adding a feature to its AI assistant speaker to interlock with Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi's connected home appliances such as lighting equipment and air purifiers.

Interlocking features which connect the products of multiple brands together such as Samsung and Google are commonly witnessed in the electronics market. But it is rare for hardware-making companies to collaborate with each other because they find connectivity between their products is enough.

Naver said Friday that Clova, its AI assistant speaker, is capable of controlling of Xiaomi's connected home appliances including smart plugs, air purifiers and robot cleaners.

The software support was provided as the number of people using Xiaomi in South Korea has gradually increased. Xiaomi products are favored by young people for affordable prices and simplistic designs.

After gaining popularity with budget products, Xiaomi has rolled out a premium lineup of home appliances in South Korea through designated distributors. Naver has forged a strategic alliance with Youmi, one of Xiaomi's sellers in South Korea.
