SEOUL -- South Korean researchers believe the global cinema industry may see a dramatic change with a technical innovation to replace conventional screens with light-emitting diode (LED) displays capable of passing sound through.

Currently, theaters beam out the voice of actors through the speakers installed behind the screen. For this reason, the screen has numerous holes for accurate voice transmission. LED screens are not commercialized because the voice of actors cannot be delivered properly.

The provincial government of Gyeonggi said Wednesday that it has financed a joint project involving a research center of Korea Aerospace University and Sonictier, an audio technology company, to develop a 25-cm square LED display module capable of passing sound through its holes.

As a result, a high-definition video can be viewed on a large LED screen without a projector, Gyeonggi officials said, adding displays of various sizes can be created by putting together closely-pierced LED modules.

They believe the new LED module could become a game changer in the global theater industry.
