SEOUL -- In an effort to reduce air pollution, South Korea will allow the use of bio heavy oil, an eco-friendly fuel made from residual oil collected after cooking meat and vegetables, as an alternative for fossil fuels at thermal power plants.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy released an advance notice on a revised law that would acknowledge bio heavy oil as a fossil fuel substitute, based on a study that began in 2014 to test the efficiency of recycled cooking oil for power generation.

The revised law will take effect on January 1 next year. Through consultations with relevant ministries and industries, the ministry plans to come up with national standards on bio heavy oil for use at heavy oil power generators.

Bio heavy oil is made from animal and vegetable oil. Oil leftover after cooking can be collected and reprocessed to remove impurities. Recycled oil emits fewer pollutants such as sulfur and nitrogen.
