SEOUL -- SK Telecom, South Korea's top mobile carrier, developed verification standards to minimize problems caused by incompatibility such as a network crash when interlinking the fifth-generation (5G) mobile network devices with other global telecom companies.

It is crucial that network devices such as servers, nodes and antennae follow the same global standards because there are chances of a network failure and malfunctioning. Devices based on different standards are not compatible.

"By developing the verification standards, we can speed up the development of commercial 5G networks and devices," SK Telecom said in a statement on Wednesday. The new verification standards will help optimize the interlinking of devices between telecom companies such as AT&T, China Mobile and France's Orange S.A.

SK Telecom said it would open the standards for other mobile carriers and device makers. The company will test commercialized devices using new standards later this year and develop additional standards for 5G networks and devices next year.

Non-standalone 5G standards were decided by 3GPP, a multi-national group of telecom organizations, in December last year. Telecom companies can create 5G networks made by different makers with no worries about incompatibility. phone makers can speed up commercialization.
