SEOUL -- Hyundai Motor made a strategic investment to a Swiss hologram company in an effort to commercialize a driver-friendly navigation system using augmented reality (AR) by 2020.
Hyundai said in a statement on Wednesday that through its investment in Wayray, the two companies will jointly develop the next-generation AR system for cars. The exact amount of the investment was not disclosed.
Hyundai said the new AR HUD system would provide a differentiated driver experience. A holographic head-up display (HUD) will show important information such as speed, location and directions. A safe driving environment will help drivers fix their eyes on the road ahead because the windshield works as a holographic display.
Distracted driving, an act of doing something else other than focusing on what's going on the road, causes road accidents. Most frequently, drivers fiddle with smartphones to control a navigation app or check messages on a social media app.
