SEOUL -- As part of a campaign to acquire new technologies, Hyundai Motor made a strategic investment into Perceptive Automata, a U.S. startup which develops software for self-driving cars to read the intentions and awareness of pedestrians and other people on the road.

Financial terms of the investment made through Hyundai CRADLE, Hyundai Motor's corporate venturing and open innovation business, were not disclosed. It a series of strategic partnerships between Hyundai Motor and foreign technology firms this year.

Hyundai CRADLE said in a statement that the investment is aimed at developing artificial intelligence software for self-driving cars and automated systems. Perceptive Automata's predictive technology helps autonomous vehicles understand the state-of-mind of people, including pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists.

"One of the biggest hurdles facing autonomous vehicles is the inability to interpret the critical visual cues about human behavior that human drivers can effortlessly process," Hyundai CRADLE vice president John Suh was quoted as saying.

"Perceptive Automata is giving the AV industry the tools to deploy autonomous vehicles that understand more like humans, creating a safer and smoother driving experience," he said.
