SEOUL -- In preparation for an era of autonomous vehicles, South Korea's state research institute will team up with domestic tech firms to develop new technologies that can be used to stop hacking attacks on the core system of self-driving cars.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said in a statement on Wednesday that it would work with ESCRYPT, an embedded security company, and Hancom MDS, an information technology convergence solution firm, to develop an Ethernet-based security solution.

Because the Ethernet connects a small group of computers in a close range, it is easy to fend off hacking attacks.

Next-generation cars need fast networks and wider bandwidth to send and receive a huge amount of on-road data, along with the development of strong anti-hacking technologies that can diagnose vulnerabilities, analyze the cause of security failure and ensure secure communication.

ETRI wants the development of new technologies that can be applied to drones, autonomous ships and robots.
