SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics, which is reportedly developing a foldable smartphone with a flexible display, has uploaded a teaser image hinting at its long-awaited next-generation folding phone.

The South Korean phone maker unveiled the teaser image showing "Samsung" folded in half via Facebook Monday. Samsung has been developing a foldable smartphone which can be opened to feature a larger screen like a tablet. The book-like smartphone can be folded to reduce space.

The creation of a foldable smartphone has been the goal aimed by many technology companies like Samsung, LG, HTC and Huawei but because it needs a flexible screen strong enough to withstand physical stress of countless folding, no companies have yet developed a folding phone with a quality good enough to be accepted by consumers.

In September, Samsung Electronics' mobile division CEO Koh Dong-jin told CNBC reporter Arjun Kharpal that Samsung has "nearly concluded" the development of its foldable smartphone and hinted that more details will be released during Samsung's developer conference in November.

Meanwhile, some technology news outlets from home and abroad estimated Samsung's folding phone will hit the market in December or in early 2019 but the tech giant is keeping its mouth tight shut.

The teaser image drew an explosive reaction from consumers. "Samsung fordable phone will out soon? Awesome!!!" Luvila Luvilia, a Facebook user, wrote. Another user Alex Gonzales expressed excitement: "Its coming. Its coming. cant waiiiittttt. Samsung your phones are fantastic."
