SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics aims to produce more than one million foldable phones if mass production begins in the first half of next year. A top official said the world's largest smartphone maker has formed a task force with Google to create an optimal user experience.

Samsung's mobile division head Koh Dong-jin told Korean reporters last week after a developer conference in San Francisco that foldable phones would be launched first in limited countries such as South Korea and the United States.

"I cannot give a specific date, but it will be released unconditionally within the first half of next year," he said. "The initial volume of Samsung foldable phones will be more than 1 million units, and we can produce more if the market response is good."

Samsung has developed a foldable smartphone which can be opened to feature a larger screen like a tablet. The book-like smartphone can be folded to reduce space. Foldable phones need a flexible screen strong enough to withstand the physical stress of countless folding.

Samsung has tried hard to overcome technical obstacles and provide an optimal user experience, Koh said, adding he met with Google CEO Sundar Picha two months ago to organize a task force for an optimal user experience based on an Android platform.

Foldable phones will be launched every year together with Galaxy S series and Galaxy Note series, he said.
