Two Samsung units team up to develop connected smart shoes

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has teamed up with Samsung C&T to develop connected smart shoes attached with a sensor interworking with a smartphone app.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Samsung C&T has completed a design patent registration for two smart shoes. Samsung C&T's fashion division is in charge of design, while Samsung Electronics provides its IT technology.

Drawings showed a sensor applied to the heel. Running activities can be recorded through interworking with a smartphone app. Samsung Electronics has developed technology for data transmission to a smartphone using Bluetooth as well as wireless charging.

Salted Venture, a spin-off company from Samsung's startup incubation program, C-Lab, is expected to participate in the development of smart shoes. The startup has released IOFIT, a solution that combines a coaching app and smart shoes using pressure sensors to improve golfing skills.

Global IT companies and fashion brands such as Nike have been involved in the development of smart shoes. According to the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, the global market for smart shoes is expected to reach 5.7 trillion won ($5.09 billion) in 2020.
