SEOUL -- K-pop star Kang Daniel was officially recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for achieving a new record for the fastest time to gain one million followers on Instagram, breaking the previous record set by Pope Francis.

Guinness said in an article on its website that Kang, a member of K-pop project boy band Wanna One, gained one million fans in 11 hours and 36 minutes with his first selfie post after he joined the social media platform on New Year's Day. He has posted four selfies and a video of his pet cat.

Guinness said the 22-year-old broke a record previously held by Pope Francis, who reached one million in 12 hours after debuting his verified Vatican Media channel 'franciscus' in 2016. As of 3:00 pm (0600 GMT) Friday, Kang had 1.4 million followers.

In "Produce 101 Season 2", a cable TV music audition survival show, in 2017, Kang was at the top of trainees to join Wanna One. After 16 months of successful activities, the project band suspended official promotions on December 31. The group will hold its farewell concert on January 24-27 at a stadium in Seoul.
