SEOUL -- To overcome technical limitations and have powerful zoom features, Samsung Electronics seeks a dramatic change in smartphone camera shooting by modifying its trademark stylus pen to have powerful lenses and a sensor that would be used for its Galaxy Note series, according to a patent diagram.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has published a granted patent submitted by Samsung that could open a whole lot of possibilities. It showed a stylus pen like S Pen, Samsung's trademark stylus pen, with four internal optical lenses and a sensor.

Nowadays, more than 1.5 trillion digital photographs are taken by smartphone cameras globally every year and the shooting ability of thumbnail-sized cameras keep on getting better. However, limitations exist because of their tiny size.

To have powerful zoom features, certain lengths of lens bodies should be secured so that internal optical lenses can be aligned accordingly to their focal lengths, but it's near impossible for smartphone lenses because their length cannot exceed the thickness of the phones. To make situations worse, smartphones are getting thinner every year.

The stylus pen shown in the patent document unveiled by USPTO on February 5 had lenses facing towards the pen's cap part where a light entering unit is placed. The way how optical lenses and an image sensor is placed is similar to that of telephoto lenses being used to take pictures of faraway objects.

Samsung's new pen also has a zoom control key. The pen fits into the body of a smartphone.
