SEOUL -- South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom has forged a partnership with American tech giant Microsoft to roll out a cloud-based real-time big data analytics service.

SK Telecom (SKT) said Wednesday that a business cooperation agreement was signed with Microsoft in Silicon Valley. SKT would launch its big data analyzer, Metatron, on Azure, the world's second-largest public cloud platform operated by the American firm, to jointly release a big data-based asset performance management service for the commercial market in July.

"The partnership is expected to set the ground for Metatron’s footprint in the global market," SKT’s data labs director Choi Yong-jin was quoted as saying. The asset performance management service will effectively manage businesses by detecting problems and calculating possible machine breakdowns by using big data.

The global market for big data is expected to reach $90 billion by 2025, according to global market research company Statistica.
