SEOUL -- South Korea's two top telecom companies, KT and SK Telecom, will introduce interfaces standardized by the ORAN Alliance, a global carrier-led effort to drive new levels of openness in the radio access network of 5G wireless systems.

Initially, the ORAN Alliance was launched by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO and Orange in an effort to drive new levels of openness. It is committed to evolving radio access networks, making them more open and smarter than previous generations. Telecom companies in South Korea and other countries have joined the alliance.

SK Telecom (SKT) plans to commercialize ORAN Alliance standards by the end of this year. It will introduce 5G solutions that improve the quality of service inside buildings through collaboration with 5G equipment providers and domestic companies.

"We are working on technology openness, sharing and cooperation so that small and medium-sized equipment makers can participate in the 5G ecosystem quickly," Park Jong-kwan, who heads SKT's 5GX Labs, said Friday in a statement.

The ORAN alliance aims to make radio access networks more open and smarter than previous generations by using real-time analytics for machine learning systems and artificial intelligence, and to equip virtualized network elements with open, standardized interfaces through reference designs.
