SEOUL -- Chinese tech giant Huawei partnered with LGU+, a mobile carrier in South Korea, to demonstrate the superiority of its Massive MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology, a core component of 5G networks, ensuring a stable and fast connection of multiple smartphones at a crowded baseball stadium.

MIMO is a technology using antennas at each end of the communications circuit. Massive MIMO is a system with a high number of antennas that make it far more resistant to interference and intentional jamming than standard MIMO networks which use two or four antennas.

The 5G era needs Massive MIMO’s ability to serve multiple users simultaneously in a condensed area while maintaining fast data rates and consistent performance. Huawei and LGU+ have tested Massive MIMO at the Jamsil baseball stadium in southern Seoul.

Massive MIMO is a fundamental technology in the successful commercialization of 5G networks," Huawei's 5G Product Line president Yang Chaobin said. "As a pioneer of such technology, Huawei has already introduced the technology extensively since 4G."

Huawei became the target of a U.S.-led boycott in 2018 after the United States government and related organizations raised allegations that Huawei equipment, including backbone network infrastructure and handsets, have security risks which could lead to leaks of vital information including personal and industrial information.

Despite U.S. calls to boycott Huawei's equipment and backbone network infrastructure, LGU+ became the only South Korean mobile carrier to adopt Huawei's 5G equipment, saying it had no problem when Huawei's equipment was used for 4G services.

LGU+ can provide download speeds exceeding 1.3Gbps, facilitated by the deployment of Huawei's 5G technology, Yang said at a press conference in  March, adding his company was at least 12 to 18 months ahead of our industry peers as the world's No. 1 5G vendor. Huawei will open a 5G technology lab in South Korea in an apparent bid to collect data in a country which has moved aggressively to establish a nationwide 5G network.
