SEOUL -- A wireless 5G commercial network will be used for the first time in South Korea to live broadcast a golf tournament without complicated transmission methods such as complex lines and relay vehicle facilities.

Through cooperation with JTBC's cable golf channel, SK Telecom (SKT), a leading mobile carrier in South Korea, set up 5G wireless broadcasting facilities at the third, fourth and ninth holes of the Sky72 gold course in the western port city of Incheon, where SKT Open 2019, a four-day golf event, is to be held on May 16.

"This is the first time for a 5G commercial network to be used in sports," SKT said in a statement on Tuesday. ENG cameras connected to a small 5G modem will shoot the game and sends it to JTBC via a 5G wireless network and broadcasts it through SKT's over-the-top (OTT) platform, Oksusu.

Through Oksusu, SKT will provide various videos from the perspective of spectators and viewers can analyze the swing of players with slow motion using a high-speed camera.

Using 5G features such as high capacity, ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency characteristics, it is free from various physical constraints to broadcast sports games such as marathon and golf that run in a wide space, SKT said. "In particular, it is expected to bring innovation to the broadcasting industry as it can reduce all costs for installing relay cars and cables."

"Because 5G live broadcasting is free from limitations, it can be used not only in sports but also in various other fields," Kim Hyuk, head of SKT's 5GX media business group, was quoted as saying.

The establishment of 5G networks in South Korea triggered a flurry of business cooperation in various sectors. SKT has agreed with terrestrial broadcasters to develop a live broadcasting system using 5G, and it hopes to apply 5G technology to various broadcasting fields.

In June, SKT will use its 5G technology to live broadcast the primary competition of "The League of Legends", the world's most popular online game developed by American game maker Riot Games. Viewers can zoom in on the broadcast screen with their fingers up to four times without compromising picture quality.
