SEOUL -- LG Electronics strengthened its partnership with Qt, a software company in Finland, to make its own operating system called "webOS" more competitive and provide new user experiences for smart TVs, cars and robots.

LG's webOS is a Linux kernel-based multitasking operating system for smart devices and it has been used as a mobile operating system. Qt has developed a multi-platform Graphical User Interface (GUI) framework.

LG said Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Qt to expand the ecosystem of webOS.

"Our cooperation with Qt will make webOS more competitive," LG Electronics chief technology officer Park Il-pyeong said. "We will provide new user experiences not only for smart TVs, but also for cars, Internet of Things, and robots."

As Qt adopted webOS as a reference platform, LG will be able to quickly receive support for the latest version of Qt in future webOS development. The two companies would jointly develop open sources and cooperate in expanding the webOS ecosystem.
