SEOUL -- In an effort to benchmark K-pop boy band BTS' strong fan interaction, GFRIEND will open a global fan community on Weverse, a smartphone app-based platform operated by Big Hit Entertainment, the boy band's agency.

The six-member girl band tweeted that it would open a fan community on Weverse in August. GFRIEND currently uploads notifications through social media such as Twitter and Facebook, but they would be able to interact with fans in real-time by using Weverse.

GFRIEND's tweet was uploaded a few hours after Big Hit announced the acquisition of Source Music, a domestic label which manages the girl group. Big Hit promised to run Source Music as a subsidiary by retaining its existing management, style and independence.

GFRIEND, which debuted in January 2015, has a solid fan base supported by many foreign fans after it gained global attention with hit songs such as "Me Gustas Tu", "LOVE WHISPER" and "Fever".

GFRIEND is apparently benchmarking BTS, which has built up a strong fan base by sincerely communicating with fans through social media. BTS opened a fan community on Weverse operated by Big Hit's entertainment platform subsidiary beNX in June.

By using the Weverse platform, ARMY, BTS' international fan club, provides exclusive content featuring BTS. Fans also get a chance to grab the first glance at some of the behind-the-scenes videos as incentives. The boy band interacts with fans via text messages.
