SEOUL -- Using 5G and other advanced technologies, KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, has developed a new outside plant (OSP) management system called "ATACAMA" that manages all processes from designing infrastructures to control. Outside plant refers to conduits, ducts, and other physical infrastructures.

KT, one of the country's three 5G service providers, said Wednesday that it has completed ATACAMA by databasing all know-how of experts in design, operation, control, and disaster recovery. The new system reduces time dramatically to design an optical cable network.

KT said it has introduced OSP-managed solutions to detect and put down fire at communication tools and manage manholes with artificial intelligence. If a newly developed fire detection technology detects abnormal changes in temperature inside a telecommunication port, 5G robots move along the rails will extinguish fires by spraying fire powder while broadcast the situation in real time with full high-definition and infrared cameras.

A manhole management solution can detect the flooding of manhole facilities in real time and take quick action remotely by sending a 5G robot installed with a 360-degree camera and sensors to inundated manholes.

"In order to enjoy the super-connected society that will be centered on 5G, OST, which is the foundation of telecommunication infrastructure, needs to be more stable than anything else," said Oh Sung-mok, present of KT's network business division.
