SEOUL -- Doosan Babcock, a subsidiary of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, a key contractor in South Korea's nuclear power industry, has secured a joint order with local partners to provide facilities for a project to construct a nuclear power station in South West England.

Doosan Heavy said in a statement on Thursday that the order was placed by Nuclear New Build Generation Company (NNB GenCo), a subsidiary created by EDF Energy which is an energy company in charge of building and operating new nuclear power stations in Britain. Doosan Babcock offers specialist services and technologies to power generation and petrochemical industries.

The South Korean company said that Doosan Babcock won a joint order with four local companies for machinery, electrical instrumentation and air-conditioning facilities in the Hinkley Point C project to construct a 3,200 MW nuclear power station with two reactors in Somerset by 2025. Doosan Babcock's order is worth about 200 billion won ($165 million).

The new order set the stage for Doosan to enter the global market for new nuclear power plants, Doosan Heavy's power service business head Mok Jin-won said, vowing to step up efforts to tap into service businesses in the British nuclear power market.

Doosan Heavy has been involved in the construction of nuclear power plants in South Korea, but its domestic business outlook became uncertain after President Moon Jae-in pushed for a policy of phasing out nuclear power plants and replacing them with natural gas and renewable energy. Moon has promised to support exports of home-made nuclear reactors and related technologies.
