SEOUL -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has localized a shaft generator motor (SGM), which is being used more widely by ships as a clean source of power. It generates power by using the rotational force of the vessel's propulsion engine shaft in operation.
DSME said Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with two co-developers C&A Electric and Hyosung Heavy Industries for commercial production. The system was localized in a three-year joint project to cope with new rules imposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. maritime safety agency.
DSME said the successful localization would allow the shipbuilder to supply SGMs cheaper than competitors. A standard generator burns a large volume of fuel, which increases the operational cost, requires more frequent maintenance and contributes to air pollution. Instead of independently driven generators, shaft generators have become a more common option to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs and reduce emissions.
