SEOUL -- SK Engineering & Construction agreed to participate in a project worth $200 million to modernize the performance improvement of aging facilities at Uzbekistan's Mubarek power plant, which will be renovated under a campaign by the Central Asian nation to boosts energy generation.

SK E&C said Friday that the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Uzbekistan's energy ministry and the Korea Energy Agency, which provides energy management services, in a ceremony in Seoul the previous day.

The project is aimed at modernizing the 120MW natural gas cogeneration plant that began commercial operations in 1985. Uzbekistan hopes to improve the plant's performance to 300MW. After a feasibility study within the first half of next year, SK E&C plans to sign a final contract in 2021. The company also agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation with the Uzbek government to proceed with other projects.
