SEOUL -- In an effort to broaden its presence in the global market for vehicles powered by alternative fuel, Hyundai Motor will introduce 13 new electric and plug-in hybrid models including sedans and sport utility vehicles by 2022.

Hyundai Motor said it would globally release 13 "eco-focused" models, six sedans and seven sport utility vehicles (SUVs), over the next three years. The carmaker so far has released five models including Ioniq, a compact electric sedan, and Nexo, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle.

"As the automotive industry evolves to meet the needs of a diverse customer base and environmentally-aware society, we will continue to provide alternative-propulsion options in a variety of product choices," Hyundai Motor America vice president Mike O'Brien was quoted as saying.

The carmaker will showcase Ioniq's revamped electric and plug-in hybrid versions at the Los Angeles Motor Show later this month. Hyundai also said a hybrid-electric version of its mid-sized sedan Sonata will be released next year. Hybrid electric cars have conventional combustion engine systems as well as an electric propulsion system to achieve better fuel efficiency.

Hyundai also seeks to become the first mover in the commercial eco-friendly vehicle market with a concept model for "HDC-6 NEPTUNE", a hydrogen-powered Class 8 heavy-duty truck, at the North American Commercial Vehicle (NACV) Show held at Georgia World in October.

Because of tightening global emissions standards, commercial vehicle makers are forced to move onto clean energy from conventional fossil fuels. Other than Hyundai, commercial vehicle makers such as Nikola, an American hybrid heavy-duty truck maker, Daimler and Toyota are developing hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, but they are taking a cautious approach because hydrogen fuel charging infrastructure was not established.
